The purpose of the athletic program at St. Bernadette School is to complement the home, church and school in the development of the “whole person.” Underlying this purpose is the firm, very real foundation of Catholic-Christian beliefs and practices, making our program significantly different in its effort to reflect Christ and teach as Jesus Himself did. Respect should be present at all times, in the players, coaches, and parents. No one should offend in word or conduct. Respect of others is expected. Activities of the program are intended for the benefit and development of the student athletes, and are coached in a way that suits their age and physical growth. Such programs offer our students the opportunity to participate in sports activities that contribute to the individual’s physical development. Such physical development is part of the development of students who are well rounded academically, socially and morally. The aims are:
These aims should be achieved through consultation of the principal, the Athletic Association, and the coaches with the approval of the parents. GUIDELINES Any eligible student who expresses a desire to join a sports team shall be accepted onto the team. Students are not “cut” from a team based on tryouts. All team members are to be given a fair chance to develop their skills and compete throughout the season. Although equal playing time is not a mandate, coaches are to seek opportunities to utilize all players. Factors that influence playing time should include ability, commitment, effort, behavior, and sportsmanship, according to the judgment of the coaching staff. Specific guidelines for this program can be found in the Parent-Student Handbook. Coaches, parents, and players must sign a Statement of Understanding to ensure that this philosophy is communicated, understood, and adhered to. |
